INSTRUCTION MANUAL PREPARATION

"The trouble with most instruction manuals is that the writers never have to use them in the field."

As we often supervise field installation and system start-up as well as provide contract maintenance, we know, in a hands-on manner, the incompleteness of most instruction manuals.

We make sure that the written instructions for any system are indeed complete. When advisable, we write supplemental instructions to clarify ambiguous areas. If necessary, we will re-write the entire manual, always with the goal in mind of clarifying the information for the installer, operator, and mechanic.

Many times, we find that full understanding of what the system should do allows operators to anticipate and head off problems before they arise to interrupt production.

Too often, particularly when sub-components are factory-assembled into a system, not enough thought is given to an explanation of the functional responsibility of these components. The operators need to know why and how those components fit together, and how they behave in relation to one another.

We take a fully systematic approach to any project with which we are involved. Since most systems are actually simpler than they first appear to be, it follows that to obtain best performance, operators should understand that their simplest components can have a critical affect on total operation. Again, the key to efficient operation is understanding.
